In early 2025, Joie left her corporate job to go all-in on JC² — the fabrication and manufacturing business she and her husband Jason had been building on the side. That's when we ran into the real problem Maker Hub exists to solve.
Our garage was full. Taking on more clients meant needing more space — but the industrial space we could actually afford wanted five-year terms. That's a brutal ask when you're still growing and don't know yet what size you'll actually need. Outgrow it too fast, or need to scale back, and you're paying penalties either way.
There were smaller problems too, the kind nobody warns you about. Etsy, Stripe, and pretty much every platform you need to run a real business demands an actual business address — not your home address, published for any stranger to find. And the tools: we already owned a lot of what we needed, but not everything, and not all the time. It never made sense to lease a huge space just to fit equipment we'd only use some of the time.
So we looked around Calgary for something that solved all of it at once — a real address, shared tools, room to grow, no five-year bet. Every piece existed somewhere. Never together. So we decided to put them together ourselves.
